From Traditional Practices to Modern Technology

Since the ancient times, longevity or even eternal youth has been the dream of mankind in every culture regardless of spiritual beliefs. Especially in the Chinese traditional culture, legends of humans living for very long lives – sometimes up to hundreds or even thousands of years exist that are deemed as mysteries by most people in society. The esoteric text recording these knowledge and practices are by beyond comprehension by average population.

Until recently, there has never been so much hope for ordinary men and women to dream of a longer and healthier life due to the advancement of modern biotechnology. At the cellular level, some major mechanisms leading to human aging have been identified and medicines or supplements have been developed to battle these mechanisms. However, so far the results of these products available on the market have not been satisfactory.

Modern technological discovery

Human beings don’t live to the natural span of life.

While enjoying the convenience brought by modern technology, modern man also suffer many so called ‘modern illnesses’- diseases associated with modern lifestyle. That is because we lost our knowledge of ‘unity between man and heaven’ and treat our body as a mere tool for enjoyment.

The Yellow Emperor’s Class of Internal Medicine from 3000 years ago states: “ In the past, people practiced the Tao, the Way of Life. They understood the principle of balance, of yin and yang, as represented by transformation of the energies of universe. Thus, they formulated practices such as Dao-in, an exercise combining stretching, massaging, and breathing to promote energy flow, and meditation to help maintain and harmonize themselves with the universe. They ate a balanced diet at regular times, arose and retired at regular hours, avoided overstressing their bodies and minds, and refrained from overindulgence of all kinds. They maintained well-being of body and mind; thus, it is not surprising that they lived over one hundred years.

These days, people have changed their way of life. They drink wine as though it were water, indulge excessively in destructive activities, drain their Jing-the body’s essence that is stored in the kidney-and deplete their Qi. They do not know the secret of conserving their energy and vitality. Seeking emotional excitement and momentary pleasures, people disregard the natural rhythm and order of universe. They fail to regulate their lifestyle and diet, and sleep improperly. So it is not surprising that they look old at fifty and die soon after.’’

So even in the ancient times of 3000 years ago, our ancestors already knew the consequences of not following the way of the Dao. In our modern times, we are even worse in many ways. We have to restore our knowledge of the Dao and know that human beings are generated by the energies of the heaven and the earth and we have to live by the natural law to enjoy living to the full lifespan. It means we have to enjoy every moment of life in a healthy way and also live to the limit of our biological design. Modern medical science also theorizes that man’s biological life limit should be between 120 and 150 years old. However, nowadays people living up to 80 or 90 years old are already rare. Also despite the progress made by modern medical science, most diseases still can’t be fully cured and instead of improving the quality of life, they only prolong the life. They are very costly without real benefit.

Steal the Yin Yang and take over the Creation

Daoist cultivation system seeks to surpass natural limitations while following the law of the nature; it is reengineering of human life. They believe that human life is as great as the heaven and the earth and we, not the heaven, can be in control of our lives; this is the utmost respect of human life.

“To be a proper man one has to follow the normal the creation process but to be the immortal you have to reverse it” is the fundamental law. As a human you have to follow the natural law first and this law is the “Dao generates the Virtue; the Virtue generates the Yin and Yang; the Yin and Yang generates the Yin, Yang and Chi; these three generates ten thousand of things”. To reverse this process, one has to reverse from the trigrams to the four coordinates to the two extremities to the ultimate extremity; return from ten thousand things to the Dao; return from existence to non-existence.

The Daoist elixir cultivation system believe that the original Jing, original Qi and original Spirit are the foundations of human life. Even with proper lifestyle, they are depleted to a certain age – for man it is 64 years and for women it is 56 years. Then they can only be supplemented by post-natal Jing, Qi and Shen.

Elixir cultivation is to extract pre-natal Jing, Qi and Shen directly by exercising, then go through the process of refining the Jing to Qi, Qi to Shen and Shen back to emptiness so as to eventually reengineer the human body.

This process is daunting to most people in this world. For most people, even the first step, to build the foundation,is already difficult; it can easily exhausts one’s whole life. One not only has to have good natural endowment but also that under the guidance of a master who have done it. So for most people, this process is not applicable.
